So what is Day Trippin'?

So, you've just flown in to a city and found your connecting flight isn't for another day (or, you're sitting at home, it's a beautiful day and you feel like a drive somewhere. You pick). You've got a few hours spare, and you want to do something, but what!?

Put in your location, approximately how far you want to travel and maybe even narrow down your options using the tick boxes.

Each route picks a random direction, moves your distance away and finds any Lonely Planet references in that area. Anything found in the area is ranked according to what categories you have chosen and how far from the original point it was.

Why?! How!?

Sarah, Nathan and Myself(John) all attended the Melbourne Hack Day and had a great time. For those of you who attended, I was the inarticulate one.

Our implementation uses the Lonely Planet API and Google Maps (rather obviously). Our backend adds some basic geo functions, some ranking metrics and some LP API extensions (that we expect the API could do itself, but aren't exposed to the great unwashed). As with most things, a lot of the challenge was making them all talk to each other.
